Ordering From Amish Farms

Helped me regulate my cycle

When I was working on regulating my cycle, Dr. Hannah Moore introduced me to Dutch Meadows Farm. We talked a lot about nutrient-dense foods and making sure my body was getting enough of the building blocks and energy it needed. She even helped me figure out what to order from the farm and how often.

A couple of months later, along with a lot of other work, my cycle came back. Whether the food was what ultimately moved the needle, I can’t say. But the experience completely changed the way I think about where my food comes from.

There is something pretty powerful about buying food directly from farms: the food is fresher, you know more about how and where it was produced, and you're putting your money directly toward the people growing it. Supporting local and regional farms also helps preserve farmland, strengthen local food systems, and reduce some of the distance food has to travel to get to us.

And you don't have to do your whole grocery shop this way.

Start with one or two things you already buy every week — really good eggs, seasonal produce, meat, dairy — and see how you like it. There are farms that will literally deliver it to your door, which feels kind of amazing when you think about it.

A few places I love

Dutch Meadows Farm

The farm that started this for me. Dutch Meadows is a family-owned farm in Lancaster County, PA that works with a network of small family farms. They offer pasture-raised meat, eggs, dairy, produce and more, with delivery and pickup options in NYC.

Farm to People

Think farmers market, delivered. They work with local and regional farms and producers and let you build your own box with produce, eggs, dairy, meat, bread and pantry staples. You can subscribe to a farm box or order à la carte.

Flocktown Farm

For my NJ girls: Flocktown is a certified organic farm in Pittstown, NJ offering CSA boxes with delivery throughout parts of NJ, Staten Island and Pennsylvania. You can customize your box and add things like bread, milk and eggs.

LocalHarvest

Not a farm itself, but a great place to find CSAs, farms, farmers markets and local food near you if you're somewhere outside NYC/NJ.

You really don't have to make it complicated. Pick one item, find a farm you trust, and start there, see how ya feel.
